Harvey Milk day focus on

gay violence

Milk

The Harvey Remembrance Committee, an ad hoc group organized by the Gay Services Network of Kansas City and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, has declared Sunday, Nov. 27 to be Harvey Milk Remembrance Day. It is 10th the of anniversary Milk's assasination.

The committee urges lesbian and gay groups nationwide to hold events, such as vigils and workshops, remembering Milk and focusing attention on the growing problem of anti-gay violence.

was

Milk, a tireless and outspoken advocate for the rights of gay people and other oppressed groups, elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. On Nov. 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor.

That night, more that 40,000 marchers converged on San Francisco's City Hall to mourn the deaths. Months later, Dan White was acquitted on firstdegree murder charges and convicted of manslaughter, for which he served five years in prison. The lenient sentence shocked and outraged many, sparking angry protests and violence.

Below are some suggested events for groups wishing to mark the 10th anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk.

Organizers may wish to plan observances for Nov. 27, the day he was assasinated, or during the following week.

The suggestions below are just that. The possibilities for remembrances of Harvey Milk are limited only by your imagination and energy. If you are planning an event, please contact Carl Hippensteel at (816)/561-8508.

Scott Smith, executor of Milk's estate, said, "A national day of remembrance is appropriate because Harvey's legacy extends beyond San Francisco to the entire world. Ten years later, his example continues to inspire and energize lesbian and gay people everywhere."

"The tenth anniversary of Harvey Milk's assassination allows us to not only recall his enormous contribution to our movement, but also to focus attention on the violence that still plagues our community, still threatens out freedom to live and love as we choose," said Kevin Berrill, director of NGLTV's Anti-violence Project. "It is my hope that local observances will encourage more of us to combat anti-gay violence and to demand equal protection from the criminal justice system."
